Five Questions With Ricky Trooper

The Magnum Star Live series kicks off tomorrow at the Cristal Nightclub in Port Antonio, Portland. The featured performer will be dominant dancehall artiste Tommy Lee Sparta, while popular selector Ricky Trooper will be managing the turntables.

As part of the build-up to the event, we decided to fire five quick questions at the selector. His responses are below:

1. What do you do in your free time?

In my free time, I love to watch cartoons, but the classics, like Tom and Jerry or Looney Tunes. I also like to test my cooking skills.

2. What are your impressions of the present state of dancehall music?

Dancehall is going through a lot of changes with all these new producers and artistes coming in the business, but we have to give them a chance. They will soon find the new sound to keep the music alive.

3. What is your favourite Tommy Lee song?

My favourite Tommy Lee song is Warn Dem. I do a lot of sound clashes, it is always fitting. I love the message in that song.

4. What are your impressions of Portland?

I just love all of Portland because that parish was instrumental in my early career as a selector. Portland people were the first set of people to say Ricky Trooper to the world.

5. What do you think is the answer to Jamaica’s crime problem?

There won’t be no answer to Jamaica crime problems until we have a commissioner of police and a security minister who get to understand the way these young youths of today are thinking. Just listen what the new set of artistes are singing about. Money, riches, big house, etc. and not taking nuh diss from nobody. The music a tell you what is going on within our society. That is the key to close the crime, reach the youth.
