Spice, Shenseea & Ishawna Changing Dancehall Music – Says New York Times

The Queen of Dancehall Spice along with Shenseea, Ishawna and Jada Kingdom are being lauded by The New York Times for changing the genre.

The female acts were featured on the publication last week. NY Times said men used to dominate Jamaican dancehall however Spice, Shenseea, Ishawna and Jada Kingdom are changing now that narrative.

“Known for its raunchy, sexual lyrics and explicitly provocative style, dancehall has long been dominated by men,” The New York Times reported. “In the ’80s and ’90s, female artists like Lady Saw, Sister Nancy and Patra were a rarity, using their music to challenge social and religious norms.”

“Now, many more women are making dancehall music, and they’re beginning to change the language of the genre — taking on topics like queer love and colorism,” they continued before their respective pieces on the acts.

Responding to the article Spice wrote, “Thanks @nytimes for this feature Women dominating dancehall #Queenofdancehall.” While Ishawna added, “When singing about your “Vagina” gets you featured in The NY Times Check It out guys!.”
