Few people know that reggae and pop musician Shaggy was born Orville Richard Burrell. Even fewer know that the artist known for making pop hits about ‘sexy’ ladies and men caught cheating was once enlisted in the US Marines during the Gulf War. “I think my time in the Marines taught me a lot about discipline. But it also taught me that war is ugly, and that no war comes without casualties,” he says during a phone interview.
Known for hits like “It Wasn’t Me”, “Angel” and “Summertime”, Shaggy’s music was to ’90s kids what drugs were to the Woodstock generation—like it or not, it was everywhere. The 47-year-old, one-time Grammy winner, may have traded his Hawaiian shirts for suits today, but he continues to make his signature brand of infectious music.
This Friday, Shaggy kicks off his three-city India tour with a performance at Mumbai’s Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla. “I think this will probably be the most unusual venue I’ve played. I’ve never performed at a mall before,” he says. His Pune gig coincides with the artist’s birthday. “I have no idea if there is any surprise there—not to my knowledge,” adds the Jamaican reggae artist.
Vogue decided to play a word association game with the pop artist, asking him to match his popular lyrics to a famous personality. And his answers were no short of ‘boombastic’.
