Now in the island, Belizean rapper Shyne hopes to nab a collaboration with tooted King of the Dancehall, Vybz Kartel. According to the rapper, who spoke to THE STAR yesterday, the incarcerated deejay is a highly intelligent recording artiste and he hopes to pay a visit to the ‘Clarks’ singer while in the island.
Shyne is currently working with Jamaican producer Supa Hype and singer Barrington Levy with whom he made hits like Bad Boy and Bonnie and Shyne. But during the visit, he hopes to get Vybz Kartel on a track.
“The song will be on the ‘Diamond League’ beat, but it won’t be right without Kartel. People always ask me what I am doing, what am I going to do. I don’t want to come back with the same thing. The only thing that makes sense for me is a Shyne and Vybz Kartel record,” said Shyne, who stopped by THE STAR before heading off to Reggae Sumfest.
The rapper has already recorded his part of the song and his now awaiting Vybz Kartel’s team to fetch a verse from his alleged pool of unreleased material.
“The first Shyne song that I want them to hear, I want it to be amazing. I am waiting on Kartel. I hope he has one of those verses he recorded way back when because I think a Shyne and Kartel song is going to be huge. I don’t think there is anything that can beat that. Remember am competing with myself and my legacy. So in order to beat my previous work I have to do something just as amazing,” Shyne told THE STAR.
Shyne who is no stranger to incarceration himself, won a Grammy award for a collaboration he did with Usher, while serving a ten-year prison sentence in the United States. Having only a green card at the time of his conviction in 1999, he was ordered deported back to his homeland, Belize, in October 2009 after serving his sentence for attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment.
“I recorded two songs in prison, one song with Usher, and it sold millions of records. It was number one single and you know we won a Grammy for that. The other song was featured on the Godfather Buried Alive album…it is what it is. When the Confessions album came out I was listening to that song Confessions over and over, and then Mark Pitts who was the president of Urban Music Sony BMG at the time called me and said Usher wants me to do the song. I was sitting in my cell and that just happened,” he said.
