Beenie Man, whose birth name is Moses Davis, was born in the Waterhouse district of Kingston and began his musical career at an early age. At the age of eight, he won the national Tastee Talent contest and released his first single, Too Fancy, in 1981 with record producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes.

Lawes would later include him on the 1983 album “Junjo Presents Two Big Sounds.” The young artiste would release his debut album that same year, entitled The Invincible Beenie Man: The Ten Year Old DJ Wonder, which was produced by Bunny Lee. Beenie Man’s first hit, Over the Sea, was also released in 1983, while his first number one single in Jamaica, Matie, was released ten years later in 1993, but the deejay would truly rise as one of dancehall’s biggest contenders in the mid-to-late 90s.
