Jah Cure performs for JVD - The BVI BeaconSeveral people have bashed the Grammys for some of the nominations in the Best Reggae Album category, but Jah Cure said that dancehall acts should not curse the organizers.

“Nuh deejay, no dancehall [artiste] nuh fi cuss fi Grammy if dem nuh get it because the last dancehall artiste weh get Grammy was Beenie Man… Shabba Rankin,” Jah Cure said in an Instagram Live on Friday before premiering his new track, Thousand Miles Away.

“When mi see say it (The Cure album) nuh nominate, mi just go to bed, take a rest.”

Beenie Man got the award in 2000 for his album, Art and Life, and Shabba Ranks copped the award in 1991 and 1992. Sean Paul and Shaggy are also dancehall acts, but not as hardcore. They won the award 2003 and 1995, respectively.

Jah Cure’s comments come after Popcaan bashed the Academy after his Fixtape album did not get a nomination despite its chart successes.

The acts who got nominated in the Best Reggae Album category this year were Skip Marley, Buju Banton, Toots & The Maytals, The Wailers and Maxi Priest.

But in explaining his point, Jah Cure said that the award has traditionally been won by reggae singers, as opposed to deejays.

“If yuh nuh get the Grammy this year, you get it next year,” he added while giving props to Popcaan, Koffee, Lila Ike and Protoje.
