After artistes such as Rygin King, Teejay, Squash and Daddy 1 opened the eyes of industry professionals in 2019 to the growing reputation of Montego Bay as a musical hotspot, Flanker native Shaneil Muir looks to carry on the momentum.
“To be honest, the success and the reception I have been getting happened while living overseas but I have seen a few females, not only singers and deejays, but dancers and other creatives within Montego Bay with the potential to make it to where I am,” she said. “It’s all about learning the ins and outs of the business, and once a person knows the work they’re in, the better for them to manoeuvre their way to the top.”
Shaneil Muir has covered many miles since making it in the top five in the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition in 2016. That year she collaborated with songbird Denyque on the hit single Proud Wifey, but as a songwriter. They joined forces again this year to create the track Same Guy, which garnered 500,000 views within a week and held the number one trending spot for two consecutive weeks. But her solo effort Yamabella has three million views since June. She opined that the track is doing well because of the “realness of the lyrics that speak against people trying to impress people by going out of their way, living above their means and with no level-headed priorities”.
“The term ‘yam head’ was being used frequently, and I wanted to make it specific to females,” she said.
She has been getting immense support across social media, with fans calling her to rightfully claim the ‘trending gyal’ crown.
But Shaneil Muir says the success of the track is owed to her staying true to her mantra of “talent over hype” as she maps out a landmark career in music.
She said, “I am not looking to ruffle any feathers; I don’t know of anyone trying to ruffle mine either. Shaneil is just here to do Shaneil. I don’t play with chickens. As I said before, I am not here to focus on any artistes’ careers but my own, to learn more about the business and the art in order to move forward to better myself,” she said. “Right now, my supportive fan base is expecting certain collaborations with other talented artistes but everything happens in a natural progression.”
She said that she wants to work with the likes of Spice, Shenseea, Jada Kingdom and Stalk Ashley “if the opportunity and song idea come up”.
