Sumfest Goes Social

This award scheme is the second in as many years staged by Downsound Entertainment which produces Reggae Sumfest. Last year they introduced the Inspire Awards to recognise some of the pioneers of reggae music and those who have made a positive contribution to the local music industry.

According to head of Downsound Entertainment Joe Bogdanovich given the plethora of award shows which are currently being held, it was thought that the time was right for a change.

“We did the Inspire Awards last year and that was great. Even though we did not have a lot of people turning out it was great for the industry. But when we looked at the scene this year there have been so many other shows… IRAWMA just returned to Jamaica after many years, we realised there was time for a change. We looked at what was happening out there and picked up on the strong influence that social media has these day, so we came up with the Get Social Awards which is definitely something more contemporary,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

The Get Social Awards features an online-based voting mechanism. The awards seeks to pay tribute to the best of Jamaican and Caribbean social media by recognising influencers, companies and organisations on Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. Persons are asked to vote for their favourites in 37 categories which come under five broad headings — Music, Food & Drink, Lifestyle, Social and Entertainment.

“More than 25,000 people have responded and over 8000 have voted which is very important. This is such a great promotion in the run up to Reggae Sumfest. it show the power of social media these days and how influential this form of communication is.” he continued.
