The Marley family has donated instruments to Charlie Smith Comprehensive High School. The presentation was made last Friday at the school in Trench Town in Kingston.
Sherone Parsons, head of the school’s music programme, was presented with six drums (bass, repeaters, fundes), two flutes and tambourines by veteran percussionist Herman “Bongo Herman” Davis and Ali Cole (representing the Marleys) and percussionist Maroghini.
Bongo Herman, who has been recording for over 45 years, did an impromptu performance during the event.
He and Maroghini — a former teacher at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts — will conduct classes at the school on Mondays and Thursdays.
Some of Marley’s hallowed songs, including Trenchtown Rock, Concrete Jungle and No Woman, No Cry were inspired by his Trench Town years.
