Vybz Kartel gave me the big break

Record producer Ainsley ‘Not Nice’ Morris said he would not have experienced such success in his career had it not been for Vybz Kartel.

Not Nice, however, revealed that while Vybz Kartel was a part of the Portmore Empire, the deejay was a little reluctant at first to work with him.

“Me use to give him riddims all the time but him never pay me no mind and him admit it to me long after,” Not Nice told THE STAR in a recent interview.

“He was in the community as the bigger artiste but being that we never really reach da level deh yet him never really acknowledge me. It wasn’t until mi record a song with Black Ryno on the Remand Riddim called Real Stinga that him really recognise me. Him hear the song and ask bout the riddim and den him call me and things start to pick up from there,” Not Nice explained.

The producer expressed gratitude first to Deva Bratt for introducing him to Vybz Kartel and then to the self proclaimed Worl’ Boss himself for helping to establish his name in the industry.

“Before Vybz Kartel we just did a do this and nutting never a gwaan. We never did a make no money so Vybz Kartel really get mi name out there.”

Vybz Kartel is currently serving a life sentence for murder.

Not Nice, when asked by THE STAR whether or not he had any regrets being associated with the deejay, had a resounding no.

“No man how mi fi regret that,” he said.

“Mi nah say if mi never know Vybz Kartel mi wouldn’t’t make it in the business because we have the talent but it woulda take longer fi get da break deh,” he stressed.

Bad things

He did admit, however, that his association with Vybz Kartel affected his business as there were many artistes who did not want to work with him because of the ‘Gaza’ affiliation.

“First of all let me say this, Vybz Kartel never tell me say don’t voice dat man or dat man but people just did have it fi say ‘Gaza over deh so, so mi nah try link Not Nice or voice fi him,” he explained.

“Good things and bad things came from the affiliation because while some people say ‘no a Gaza thing dat’ others would say ‘yes mi want voice fi Not Nice because a him a voice Vybz Kartel and Kartel a di baddest thing’ so it had negatives and positives.”

The producer has had his fair share of ups and downs in the industry but says he’s looking forward to the future as he believes that several projects he is currently working on have the potential to do well.

“We always a work innu. Is not like mi nuh know hits innu but I don’t focus on that. I cant tell you when a song is going to be a hit but I have plenty of potential hit material.”

The producer is currently working on projects with Popcaan, Beenie Man, Konshens, Richie Stephens and his two artistes Wasp and Jah Frass.
