Artistes Fired Up For Sumfest Dancehall Night

With Sumfest Dancehall Night set to heat up Catherine Hall in Montego Bay tonight, THE WEEKEND STAR took the liberty of catching up with some of the top acts before their anticipated showcase at one of reggae’s most celebrated events annually.

I-Octane, who has referred to himself as ‘The Closer’, disclosed that he was approached to execute closing duties this year by the organisers of the show. However, he told THE WEEKEND STAR that he opted to leave the position vacant, hoping that one of the newer batch of dancehall acts would live up to the responsibility.

“Closing is a pros and con situation. Mr Gourzong saw me as a candidate to close the show in the past and I always deliver. I was asked again to close the show this year and I turned it down. The man dem who seh dem hot now must step up to the plate and close it,” he said, adding that he is a sought-after act because he always delivers.

As for his game plan tonight, the singjay hinted that patrons will be treated to a different aspect of his persona.

“They can expect a performance filled with energy. Normally, I would stick to the script, but I will be speaking to the fans this year because there are certain things I want to get off my chest and yuh done know the fire brand will be in full effect,” he said.

High-riding dancehall artiste Savage made his solo debut at Sting last year, and will be following up on the accomplishment at Sumfest. He told THE WEEKEND STAR that fans will see a different side of Jamaican culture tonight.

“It is going to be a different show. I will be bringing back the Jamaican kumina and run out in my turban. It will be a full package. So, people turn out because I will be taking the stage at 10 p.m,” the Culu Culu deejay said.

United Kingdom-based dancehall star Don AndrE was in high spirits when contacted. He said he would be cruising with Ding Dong and Chi Ching Ching.

“My set will be unique, entertaining, and exciting. I am anxious and can’t wait because this is literally a dream come true. Rehearsals have been going crazy and this is the first time fans will get to see me Ching and Ding Dong on the stage one time,” he said.

Tonight will also feature the likes of Spice, Nesbeth, Popcaan, Agent Sasco, and Beenie Man.
